Our name and purpose
The PsycheMatrica Lab develops and evaluates psychometric and statistical methods for studying the human psyche—its nature, structure, dynamics, and development. Our name combines the Greek psychē (mind or soul) with matrica, a coined form inspired by the Latin matrix (source or underlying structure). The name also evokes the mathematical matrix, reflecting our use of data and mathematical models to represent and analyze psychological and learning phenomena. Together, these meanings express our mission to develop models that enable rigorous measurement and empirical investigation of how people think, feel, believe, learn, and act. We make these methods accessible to researchers and pursue collaborative empirical research with substantive-area experts.
Our methodological mission
Our primary mission is to advance quantitative methodology for the psychological and learning sciences. We develop mathematical, statistical, and computational frameworks for measuring psychological and cognitive constructs through psychometrics and educational measurement, including factor and component analysis. We also develop methods for investigating relationships among constructs and between constructs and observable behavior, as well as individual differences and change over time, through structural equation modeling, longitudinal and multilevel analysis, and functional data analysis. Furthermore, we integrate psychometric models with AI approaches, including neural networks and reinforcement learning, to develop game- and simulation-based assessment systems that provide personalized feedback. Through theoretical analysis, simulation studies, empirical collaboration, and accessible research software, we seek to advance methodological innovation and its practical application.
Empirical research through collaboration
Our methodological research addresses heterogeneous data spanning biological, individual, and societal systems, from genetics and neuroimaging to intensive longitudinal observations of behavior and learning, as well as social and institutional characteristics. We collaborate with scholars across substantive disciplines to investigate empirical questions, evaluate new methods, and identify methodological challenges that inspire further advances.
Our long-term vision
Underlying our scientific endeavors is our conviction that examining oneself, growing in knowledge and wisdom, and exercising sound judgment are essential to human flourishing. In an age of advancing artificial intelligence and pervasive digital influences, our long-term vision is to develop scientifically validated, privacy-preserving technologies that provide timely, personalized feedback to support self-understanding, effective learning, and independent judgment. Ultimately, we seek to empower individuals to put knowledge into practice, guard their inner lives with diligence, renew their minds, and discern and hold fast to what is good.
